For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin — real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way. Something to be got through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin.
At last in dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.
– Fr. Alfred D’Souza
When I read that quote in Arianna Huffington’s new book Thrive, I thought about all of my obstacles and all of the times I thought that life was going to really start after …
- I got my first pair of heels.
- Graduated from high school.
- Went away to college.
- Got a job, and another and another.
- Gave birth to my daughter.
- Married the perfect man for me.
- Got sick.
- Got well.
- Started my own microbusiness.
- Quit my job.
- Traveled the world and then sent my daughter into it.
And still, more triumphs and setbacks appeared pulling my focus from everyday life, but now I know that is everyday life. That, and everything in between. This is it and I am in it. Immersed, entrenched, and grateful for the chance to do it again tomorrow.
Embrace the obstacles and distractions. Forget the timeline you had for your dream life.
This is it and once you show up, it’s better than anything you could have possibly dreamed.
